John Burr (Scots/English, 1831-1893)

Painting size: 15.5” x 26.5” A student of Scots artist, Scott Lauder, John Burr studied at the Trustee’s Academy in Edinburgh. He moved to London in 1861 with his brother and fellow painter, Alexander Burr. Upon his arrival Burr began exhibiting at the Royal Academy. He continued to exhibit there until 1882. In addition, he exhibited at Suffolk Street and the Old Watercolour Society. Burr is known for his genre paintings involving small children and domestic scenes. Source: Wood, Christopher. The London to Bath Coach Pulling up to the Spaniards Tavern, Bath, England in 1884 Oil on Canvas, signed, and dated l.r.
Painting: 14: x 26" A newly discovered gem from one of England's best coaching painters. John Charles Maggs (1819–1896) was a painter best known for his coaching scenes. He was born in Bath, England in 1819, his father being a furniture japanner there. John painted a series of famous coaching inns, and also a series of 80 metropolitan inns, in which he exploited the picturesque and historical aspect of his subject, to which his talent was best suited. Other subjects he painted include Newmarket Races, Robbing the Mails, The News of Waterloo, The Market Place at Bath. The period he illustrated spans about two centuries; from the days before Hogarth, to the end of the reign of William IV. His work enjoyed great popularity at a time when there was much interest in such vivid reconstruction of the 'romantic past'. John Maggs' father, James, is recorded as an artist at Bath 1837–1841 and his uncle as a portrait painter 1846–1848. His daughter also assisted at his studio, known as the Bath Art Studio. Maggs lived in Bath his whole life, and died there on 3 November 1896, aged 77. THE SPANIARDS TAVERN The Spaniards Inn is a historic pub on Spaniards Road between Hampstead and Highgate in London, England. It lies on the edge of Hampstead Heath near Kenwood House. The pub is believed to have been built in 1585 on the Finchley boundary, with the tavern forming the entrance to the Bishop of London's estate—an original boundary stone from 1755 can still be seen in the front garden. Opposite it there is a toll house built in around 1710. would lead to more and faster traffic. Dick Turpin is thought to have been a regular at the Inn, as his father had been its landlord.What is certain is that highwaymen frequented this area and likely used the Inn to watch the road; at that time the Inn was around two hours from London by coach[citation needed] and the area had its fair share of wealthy travellers. Records from the Old Bailey show that on 16 October 1751 Samuel Bacon was indicted for robbery on the King's Highway and was caught 200 yards from the Spaniards In 1780 rioters involved in the Gordon Riots, opposed to the relaxation of laws in England that restricted Catholicism, marched on Hampstead intent on attacking Kenwood House, the home of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. The landlord of the Spaniards at the time is reported to have given them free drinks, keeping the rioters occupied, until the local militia arrived, thus saving the house. The pub has been mentioned in Dickens's The Pickwick Papers and Bram Stoker's Dracula, and has been frequented by the artist Joshua Reynolds and the poets Byron and Keats. According to the pub, Keats wrote his Ode to a Nightingale in the gardens, and Stoker borrowed one of their resident ghost stories to furnish the plot of Dracula. An Artist at Work Oil-on-canvas, signed lower left and dated “1863”
Painting Size: 22.25” x 18” This charming portrait of a young woman artist at work is a wonderful depiction of the painter and her tools. Her subject of a vase of flowers with fruit sits on a table to her right. The sturdy adjustable easel has a shelf where she has laid out her tubes of pigments. She is using a mahl stick to create a bridge across the canvas which supports her painting hand to avoid touching the surface. An artist’s apron lays across her lap to protect her skirt. Her full concentration is on the canvas in front of her which is nearing completion. J. Henry Smith was a painter of genre, landscapes and animals, living in London, Brixton and South Lambeth who exhibited extensively from 1852-1893 at the royal Academy, the British Institution, the society of British Artists and elsewhere. Titles exhibited at the Royal Academy included “Where the Shoe Pinches” (1882) and “A Book is the Best Solitary Companion in the World” (1885).

Two Views of the West of England A pair of oils on canvas, retaining Frost and Reed Gallery labels.
Sight Size: 10.25" x 13" Born at Atherstone, Warwickshire, England on May 17th, 1815, Syer studied with J. Fisher, a miniaturist, and settled in Bristol. Syer was one of the prime favorites of the Victorian era. He painted landscapes and coastal scenes with figures, often in Devon and Wales, of which he was regarded as a specialist and commanded high prices. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-Colours, and for some years he belonged to the Royal Society of British Artists, but resigned his membership in 1875 after his election to the Institute. He also exhibited 19 works at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, 11 at the British Institute and 63 at the Royal Society of British Artists as well as at the Grosvenor Gallery. Examples of his paintings and drawings are in the Leeds Gallery, the Birmingham Gallery ,the Bristol Gallery, the Leicester Art Gallery and the Sheffield Art Gallery.

Woodland Fall Landscape Oil on panel, signed in lower left corner, “JN White, R.I.”
Painting size: 6.75” x 10” Known for his rustic genre paintings and landscapes, White attended the Royal Scottish Academy. By 1877, he moved to Devon and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street and the New Watercolor Society. On this landscape, White painted the initials “R.I.” after his name, indicating that he was a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors. Although this work is in oil, White’s scumbled brushwork has the immediacy of watercolor and creates the atmospheric haze of a fall afternoon. John White was also a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Oil-Colors. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Watercolor Artists up to 1920 (Mallalieu, 1976) and the Dictionary of British Art, Volume IV Victorian Painters (Wood, 1995). Joseph Mortimer Lichtenauer, Jr.

Moods Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left corner “Lichtenauer 1904.” Painting: 28” x 40” Frame: Born in New York City, Joseph Mortimer Lichtenauer studied at the Art Students League with Mowbray before moving to Paris where he entered the Académie Julian. There he studied under Merson and Laurens. Additional years of travel and study in Florence, Italy no doubt influenced his tastes, evidenced by this idyllic painting of classicized female figures romping in a sunny field. The image is reminiscent of the fanciful landscapes of Romantic painter, Puvis de Chevannes. A muralist as well, Lichtenauer painted the ceiling of the Shubert Theater in New York City and created murals for the Adelphi Theater. His work has been collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution. Lichtenauer was also a member of the Salmagundi Club and the American Federation of the Arts. Classical Figure with a Lyre Oil on Panel, signed and retaining a paper label on the reverse
Painting: 14.5" x 8.5" Jose Rico y Cejudo was born n Seville, Spain on March 27, 1864. He was the student of M. Ussel and J. Garcia Ramos at the School of Fine Arts in Seville. Eduardo Cano also played a role in the education of Cejudo as Cejudo would often pay visits to the artist'a studio. In 1888 he received a scholarship to study painting in Rome for seven years. While there, he made visits to the studios of his fellow countrymen Jose Villegas and Jose Gallegos. After his experiences in Rome, he returned to work in southern Spain. Cejudo taught art classes at the School of Fine Arts in Malaga from 1905. He exhibited his work and won various medals, such as a first place medal at Grenada in 1902, and a medal at the National Society of Fine Arts in 1910. Cejudo specialized in painting "anecdotal scenes from everyday life, often portraying his figures in gardens, patios and other intimate spaces. His paintings are characterized by a bright luminous palette." Some of his works are held in museum collections in Cadiz, Spain: London England and Madrid and Seville, Spain.

Justin Faivre (American)
Decline of the Windjammers Watercolor on paper, signed and dated: “1934” and titled in pencil on the reverse.
Sheet size: 12.5” x 18.5” Justin Faivre was born in Matthews, Indiana. At the age of 5, however, he moved to Portland, Oregon . As a teenager he studied at the Portland Art Gallery and took private art lessons with Howard Ellis. In 1923 Faivre left Portland for Los Angeles, but only a few years later moved to San Francisco. In 1934 he had his first exhibition at the Oakland Art Gallery (later to become the Oakland Museum)and continued to exhibit throughout the area. He was a member of the Hayward Art Association, Alameda Art Association, and the Society for Western Artists. Faivre was influenced by the Society of Six and his early works included landscapes, still lifes, portraits and marine subjects in both oil and watercolor. However, his later work can be characterized as more abstract and nonrepresentational. Faivre died at his Oakland, California home at the age of 88. Sadly, he died penniless and many of his paintings were stolen shortly before his death. Source:

Charles Ross Kinghan (American, 1895-1984) Watercolor on paper, signed. A painter and illustrator, Kinghan trained at the American Academy of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to his studio work, Kinghan began a career as an art teacher. In 1937, he first offered private instruction. While that continued throughout his life, he also worked for a time at the American Art Academy which was followed by a position at the Huguenot School of Art. After leaving art academia, Kinghan worked for over ten years for various advertising agencies as a “sketch man”. While busily employed in various capacities during his life, Kinghan also found time to participate in many exhibitions. His work was shown at the Art Institute of Chicago, Allied Artists of America, American Watercolor Society, National Academy of Design and many others. In addition to winning two gold medals from the Allied Artists of America, in 1956 and 1964, Kinghan was a member of the association. He also held memberships in The National Academy, Academy Artists Association, American Watercolor Society and Hudson Valley Art Association. He served both the American Watercolor Society and Hudson Valley Art Association as vice president in 1969 and 1968, respectively. He was a resident of Laguna Beach, CA at the time of his death. Kinghan is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk.

Edgar Nye (American, 1879-1943)
Hillside Landscape Watercolor on paper, signed lower right Painting size: 11.5” x 17” Unframed Nye lived, worked and taught in Washington, DC for 58 years. While he may have been born in Richmond, VA, his love for the city earned him the distinction of a "native" son. Nye was educated in public schools before entering the Corcoran School of Art at age 13. He studied there for eight years before setting off on the requisite European travels. He traveled among England, France and Washington, DC for thirteen years. Along the way, he acquired a wife and a brief education at Oxford. Once settled in Washington, DC, Nye began to produce the vast body of work by which he is remembered today. Most commonly, Nye painted landscapes and street scenes. A natural outcome of his prolific creativity was participation in numerous exhibitions. His works were both included in group exhibitions and given total focus in one-man shows. The Washington Watercolor Society, Society of Washington Artists, Society of Independent Artists, Landscape Club of Washington and the Corcoran Gallery of Art were hosts to many of the exhibitions in which he participated. The Society of Washington Artists presented him with many awards during his career. On the year anniversary of his death, the Corcoran Gallery of Art presented a memorial exhibition of his work in recognition of the prominent place he held in the Washington art community. Today, his work is held domestically in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art, Phillips Collection, Georgetown University and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Overseas, his work is represented in the Plymouth Gallery, England.

Painting Size: 6 ½” x 6 ½” Born in Ireland, Duggan was brought to the United States as a young child, probably around 1810. He was a student at the National Academy of Design from approximately 1842-1849. He was a frequent exhibitor at the National Academy as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Duggan was known to have exhibited works at the Academy (1844-51) which were religious and historical in nature although he was admired by his contemporaries as a portraitist in charcoal and crayon - undoubtedly the source of his livelihood. Later works exhibited (1855-56) were portraits only. He also sculpted several medals for distribution by the American Art-Union. In the late 1840’s Duggan was a professor of drawing at the Free Academy of New York (later the City College of New York). Duggan suffered from tuberculosis and retired in 1856 at which time he went to live in London with relatives. In the spring of 1861 he went to Paris for what was intended to be an extended stay but was there only until October when he succumbed to his illness.

Painting: 20” x 16” Born in Massachusetts, Hallett studied in Antwerp and Paris. He is best known for his paintings of ships, notable marine events, and seascapes, many along Boston Harbor. He also painted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and on Mount Desert Island in Maine. Hallett worked outdoors, sketching with pencil, making color notes, and translated his sketches into oils in his studio. He and his wife Florence, also an artist, spent eighteen months studying art in Europe. The Halletts shared a studio at Fenway Studios from1907-1918. Hallett exhibited regularly at the Boston Art Club between 1877 and 1918. He was a member of the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters, as well as the Boston Art Club, and exhibited at the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association, the Eastman Chase Gallery (Boston), Poland Spring Art Exhibitions, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Max Weyl was born Dec. 1, 1837, in Germany and immigrated with his family to Williamsport, PA in 1853. At this time and after his arrival in Washington, DC in 1861, Weyl earned his living as an itinerant watch repairman. At the relatively young age of 24, he had saved enough money to open his own jewelry shop at Third Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. He was self-taught as an artist but was encouraged in the field by Washington artist Charles Lanman, who recognized his potential artistic talent. In 1870, Weyl sold his first painting to Samuel H. Kauffman, publisher of the Star . Kauffman became a regular patron of Weyl. By 1878, he had achieved sufficient success to list himself as an artist in the city directory and had devoted himself full-time to his art. A year abroad in 1879-80, visiting and studying in Paris, Vienna, Munich and Venice attached him to the Barbizon style and gave him his nickname of the "American Daubigny". His first exhibition and sale of landscapes was in 1879. Eventually, his landscapes of the Potomac River and Rock Creek Park won him much recognition and acclaim. During the years of 1882-92, he shared a studio with Richard Norris Brooke in Vernon Row at 10th and Pennsylvania, moving to the "Barbizon Studio" building, on 17th and Pennsylvania, from 1892-1903. Weyl had annual exhibitions and sales at V.G. Fischer Galleries. There was a retrospective at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1907. Weyl died July 6, 1914, in Washington, DC. Today his work can be seen in such varied locations of the Corcoran Gallery, the Cosmos Club in Washington, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Virginia Military Academy.
