Ernest Fredericks (American 1877-1958) Pseudonym for Frederick Ernest Swedlun

Winter Landscape

Oil-on-canvas, signed lower right

Painting Size: 21” x 24.75”
Frame Size: 28 ” x 31.75”

Frederick Ernest Swedlun was born in McPherson, Kansas of Swedish parents. Wishing to escape farmlife, he moved to Chicago and began studies at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In an attempt to minimize the anti-immigrant prejudice against Swedes, he began using the pseudonym “Ernest Fredericks”. Following his studies at the Academy, Swedlun exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and in the All-Illinois art shows. He was also a member of the Chicago Society of Artists.

In 1950, Swedlun and his family moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where he found endless inspiration in the beauty of the Ozarks. There, he began signing with his real name, Fred Swedlun. With his son, Glenn, he painted and taught art in the Ozarks.

This winter landscape, since it is signed with “Ernest Fredericks,” probably predates 1950 when he began to change his signature.

Swedlun’s works are held in the collections of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the State of Illinois permanent art collection, and the Eureka Springs Historical Museum.

Chiesa Santa Maria Della Salute

Oil on canvas, signed lower left and entitled on reverse.
Painting size: 24” x 18”
Frame size: 31” x 25”

American painter C. Myron Clark specialized in marine subjects and, like so many other artists, was drawn to Venice with its ongoing atmospheric shifts in the sky and sea. This work shows the church of Santa Maria della Salute, one of the city’s landmarks, at the end of the day. Clark captures the effects of the mellowing light which emphasizes the architectural details of the Baroque church and gives the surrounding buildings a soft, rosy glow. The dappled reflection of the buildings in the water animate the painting’s surface, creating a sense of energy as gondoliers navigate their small boats along the Grand Canal.
Santa Maria della Salute was built in the 17th century by the Venetians to thank God for the cessation of the plague that killed almost a third of the city’s population in 1630. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary as a restorer of health (salute) to the sick, the church is one of Venice’s most readily identifiable monuments. Clark’s rendering is quietly reassuring.
C. Myron Clark’s work is represented in the collections of the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. He is listed in "Who Was Who in American Art" (Falk, 1999)

Byron and Annabella

Oil on canvas, titled on front and signed on reverse

Painting: 10" x 12"
Frame 17" x 19"

Adrian Wiszniewski was born in Glasgow in 1958. He was educated at the Mackintosh School of Architecture and then the Glasgow School of Art from 1979 to 1983. He was influenced by New Image painting in the early 1980s, combining figurative art with social commentary. And he belonged to a group known as the New Glasgow Boys where he played a leading role. They were known in the mid 1980s with their "figure paintings as redolent of fantasy and myth as they were attuned to the workings of contemporary thought and everyday life." He gave his first solo show in 1984 in London and Glasgow; the Tate acquired some of his paintings at that time.

Between 1986-87 his paintings resided at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool. Since then he tried different directions in his work. He was engaged with printmaking, sculpture, installations, furniture and interior design and writing. As an author he explored "new media as a central part of the art of communicating fresh ideas". In 2011 an exhibition of his recent paintings were shown at 108 Fine Art, Harrogate in a collaborative exhibition with the musician and artist Edwyn Collins.

He has worked with the Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra in the production of the musical narrative The Girl, The Boy and The Hag and Adrian wrote and illustrated an accompanying book.

Following the tradition of his day, Rolle was active in many art societies. In addition to helping found the Landscape Club of Washington in 1915, he served as its president for many years. That was just one among a number of affiliations which also included the Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington, the American Federation of Arts, and the Arts Club of Washington.

Rolle also exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the old National Gallery, the Maryland Institute and at the Greater Washington Independent Exhibition of 1935. He had a joint exhibition of prints with fellow artist Benson B. Moore at Venable's Gallery in 1924.
