Evelyn Hoffer Floyd (American, 1919 - 2003)

Floyd, a notable porcelain artist in Alexandria, learned to paint on porcelain in the early 1970’s and taught her craft in workshops for the Fairfax County Adult Education program.

She was a Pennsylvania native who attended a business college before moving to Washington in 1941 to work as a secretary in the Pentagon.

Edgar Nye (American, 1879-1943)

Nye lived, worked and taught in Washington, DC for 58 years. While he may have been born in Richmond, VA, his love for the city earned him the distinction of a "native" son.

Nye was educated in public schools before entering the Corcoran School of Art at age 13. He studied there for eight years before setting off on the requisite European travels. He traveled among England, France and Washington, DC for thirteen years. Along the way, he acquired a wife and a brief education at Oxford.

Once settled in Washington, DC, Nye began to produce the vast body of work by which he is remembered today. Most commonly, Nye painted landscapes and street scenes. A natural outcome of his prolific creativity was participation in numerous exhibitions.

His works were both included in group exhibitions and given total focus in one-man shows. The Washington Watercolor Society, Society of Washington Artists, Society of Independent Artists, Landscape Club of Washington and the Corcoran Gallery of Art were hosts to many of the exhibitions in which he participated. The Society of Washington Artists presented him with many awards during his career. On the year anniversary of his death, the Corcoran Gallery of Art presented a memorial exhibition of his work in recognition of the prominent place he held in the Washington art community.

Today, his work is held domestically in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art, Phillips Collection, Georgetown University and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Overseas, his work is represented in the Plymouth Gallery, England.

Studio Antiques has found the original engraved copper printing plate of the “Capitol at Washington” done by Max Franke in 1892. We are offering a limited edition re-strike engraving of this print, handpulled from the original plate by master printmaker Roger Bailey. It will be limited to a numbered edition of only 350 and will not be republished. Each print comes with a “Certificate of Authenticity”

Lost for over a century, the unidentified copper printing plate was found at a small Washington D.C. area auction. It was dark, tarnished and dirty but we were able make out the figure of Freedom on the dome of the Capitol Building. We bought it, not knowing if it could ever again be used to print an image. We met with Professor Roger Bailey who taught printmaking at Sara Lawrence College. He suggested trying to pull a print and over the next several months he was able to meticulously restore the plate to good condition without over-restoring it to the point that it looked new. The resulting print is a stunning genuine intaglio image of our nations Capitol in 1892.

These fine quality re-strikes are not to be confused with the normal type of “fine art” prints that are widely available from many galleries or poster stores, which are generally photo lithographs of varying quality and printed on a modern paper, often not of archival quality. The subtle look and feel of a genuine intaglio art print, on fine paper along with its plate mark just cannot be reproduced with modern methods. Each impression is crafted individually and entirely by hand, in the same manner as the copperplate printer of centuries ago.The traditional hand pulled method of printing and archival quality of the paper ensures these will far outlast normal “fine art” prints.

Sketch of a Skye Terrier

Pritchard was a marine, landscape and architectural painter living in Bristol and London, who exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street and elsewhere. He is listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, and Benezit, E., Dictonnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs.

This is from a sketchbook circa 1880.

Ebenezer Colls (British , 1812-1887)

"The Old Ship Victory off Southampton Water"

Colls was a painter of shipping and coastal scenes who lived in Camden Town, London and exhibited at the British Institution from 1852-4. The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich has a pair of his paintings. Denys Brook-Hart (see below) comments "Ebenezer Colls' pictures are quite rare although some paintings which are not his are sometimes attributed to him."

HMS Victory is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, laid down in 1759 and launched in 1765. She is most famous as Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. After 1824 she served as a harbor ship. In 1922 she was moved to a dry dock at Portsmouth, England, and preserved as a museum ship.

Brass-Mounted Gonçalo Alves Collectors Cabinet

Having a moulded cornice above a central recessed section with shelves flanked to each side by rows of small drawers behind scrolling grille-inset doors with columnar uprights; the conforming base with four paneled doors, two with columnar uprights and raised on a platform base.

The inverted breakfront cabinet design in the French/Grecian manner was introduced by George Bullock in the early 19th century. This cabinet incorporates a number of elements characteristic to known Bullock examples, such as the double-heart shaped brass grills and the use of the exotic gonçalo alves timber (similar to rosewood), both found on a pair of bookcases after a design for the breakfast room of the exiled Emperor Napoleon's residence at New Longwood House on St. Helena (See: Wainwright, George Bullock, Cabinet-Maker, p. 102, pl. 39.).

Henry Perlee Parker (1795-1873)

One of the best-known painters working in north-east England during the early nineteenth century Henry Perlee Parker specialized in pictures of marine subjects and smugglers and came to be known as "Smuggler" Parker. He was a leading artist in Newcastle in the 1820s and 1830s, a member of the Northumberland Institution, and a co-founder (with T.M. Richardson) of the ill-fated Northern Academy of Arts. He died penniless in Shepherd's Bush in 1873. There was an exhibition of his work at the Laing Art Gallery, 1969-1970.
