Painting size: 15.5” x 26.5” A student of Scots artist, Scott Lauder, John Burr studied at the Trustee’s Academy in Edinburgh. He moved to London in 1861 with his brother and fellow painter, Alexander Burr. Upon his arrival Burr began exhibiting at the Royal Academy. He continued to exhibit there until 1882. In addition, he exhibited at Suffolk Street and the Old Watercolour Society. Burr is known for his genre paintings involving small children and domestic scenes. Source: Wood, Christopher. August Herman Olson Rolle, painter, printmaker and graphic artist, dabbled in many activities before turning his focus to art. Born in Sibley County, MN, in 1875, his first path toward adulthood led him to Red Wing Seminary. Service in the Spanish-American War, eventually lead him to Washington, DC where he became a forestry expert for the Census Bureau. Once in Washington, Rolle studied at the Corcoran School of Art under Messer, Brooke and Moser beginning in 1905. His specialties were landscapes and seascapes in oil and watercolor, but he also executed dryprints, woodblock prints, monotypes and etchings. Following the tradition of his day, Rolle was active in many art societies. In addition to helping found the Landscape Club of Washington in 1915, he served as its president for many years. That was just one among a number of affiliations which also included the Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington, the American Federation of Arts, and the Arts Club of Washington. Rolle also exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the old National Gallery, the Maryland Institute and at the Greater Washington Independent Exhibition of 1935. He had a joint exhibition of prints with fellow artist Benson B. Moore at Venable's Gallery in 1924. Rolle died in Washington, DC in 1941. Today, his work is represented at the Corcoran Gallery, the Historical Society of Washington, DC, and the Arts Club of Washington. A retrospective of his work was held at the Corcoran's 1982 "Washington on the Potomac" and at the National Museum of American Art's 1984 show "The Capitol Image."

As an artist, he became well known and honored for his local scenes, many of which are in major public collections. His works are held by the National Museum of American Art; Historical Society of Washington, DC; Library of Congress; The White House; Bibliothèque National de Paris; Cosmos Club; National Museum of American History; the Houston Museum of Fine Art and the Los Angeles Museum of Art. Over his life, he was honored with numerous awards for his work.

Painting: 14: x 26" A newly discovered gem from one of England's best coaching painters. John Charles Maggs (1819–1896) was a painter best known for his coaching scenes. He was born in Bath, England in 1819, his father being a furniture japanner there. John painted a series of famous coaching inns, and also a series of 80 metropolitan inns, in which he exploited the picturesque and historical aspect of his subject, to which his talent was best suited. Other subjects he painted include Newmarket Races, Robbing the Mails, The News of Waterloo, The Market Place at Bath. The period he illustrated spans about two centuries; from the days before Hogarth, to the end of the reign of William IV. His work enjoyed great popularity at a time when there was much interest in such vivid reconstruction of the 'romantic past'. John Maggs' father, James, is recorded as an artist at Bath 1837–1841 and his uncle as a portrait painter 1846–1848. His daughter also assisted at his studio, known as the Bath Art Studio. Maggs lived in Bath his whole life, and died there on 3 November 1896, aged 77. THE SPANIARDS TAVERN The Spaniards Inn is a historic pub on Spaniards Road between Hampstead and Highgate in London, England. It lies on the edge of Hampstead Heath near Kenwood House. The pub is believed to have been built in 1585 on the Finchley boundary, with the tavern forming the entrance to the Bishop of London's estate—an original boundary stone from 1755 can still be seen in the front garden. Opposite it there is a toll house built in around 1710. would lead to more and faster traffic. Dick Turpin is thought to have been a regular at the Inn, as his father had been its landlord.What is certain is that highwaymen frequented this area and likely used the Inn to watch the road; at that time the Inn was around two hours from London by coach[citation needed] and the area had its fair share of wealthy travellers. Records from the Old Bailey show that on 16 October 1751 Samuel Bacon was indicted for robbery on the King's Highway and was caught 200 yards from the Spaniards In 1780 rioters involved in the Gordon Riots, opposed to the relaxation of laws in England that restricted Catholicism, marched on Hampstead intent on attacking Kenwood House, the home of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. The landlord of the Spaniards at the time is reported to have given them free drinks, keeping the rioters occupied, until the local militia arrived, thus saving the house. The pub has been mentioned in Dickens's The Pickwick Papers and Bram Stoker's Dracula, and has been frequented by the artist Joshua Reynolds and the poets Byron and Keats. According to the pub, Keats wrote his Ode to a Nightingale in the gardens, and Stoker borrowed one of their resident ghost stories to furnish the plot of Dracula. Attributed to Pieter van Bloemen

Military Encampment Oil-on-canvas. Painting size: 23” x 32” Frame size: 31” x 40” Born in Antwerp, van Bloemen was the brother of Jan-Frans and Norbert van Bloemen. His master was the battle painter, Simon van Douw. In 1673 van Bloemen was a master in Antwerp, but he did not stay there long. He is believed to have spent 20 years in Rome and it is known that he was working there in 1688. In 1694 he returned to Antwerp where he had eight students in an atelier. Van Bloemen is noted for his paintings of horses, Italian landscapes, battle scenes and market places. His works are in the collections of many European museums. Source: Benezit, E. Max Weyl was born Dec. 1, 1837, in Germany and immigrated with his family to Williamsport, PA in 1853. At this time and after his arrival in Washington, DC in 1861, Weyl earned his living as an itinerant watch repairman. At the relatively young age of 24, he had saved enough money to open his own jewelry shop at Third Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. He was self-taught as an artist but was encouraged in the field by Washington artist Charles Lanman, who recognized his potential artistic talent. In 1870, Weyl sold his first painting to Samuel H. Kauffman, publisher of the Star . Kauffman became a regular patron of Weyl. By 1878, he had achieved sufficient success to list himself as an artist in the city directory and had devoted himself full-time to his art. A year abroad in 1879-80, visiting and studying in Paris, Vienna, Munich and Venice attached him to the Barbizon style and gave him his nickname of the "American Daubigny". His first exhibition and sale of landscapes was in 1879. Eventually, his landscapes of the Potomac River and Rock Creek Park won him much recognition and acclaim. During the years of 1882-92, he shared a studio with Richard Norris Brooke in Vernon Row at 10th and Pennsylvania, moving to the "Barbizon Studio" building, on 17th and Pennsylvania, from 1892-1903. Weyl had annual exhibitions and sales at V.G. Fischer Galleries. There was a retrospective at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1907. Weyl died July 6, 1914, in Washington, DC. Today his work can be seen in such varied locations of the Corcoran Gallery, the Cosmos Club in Washington, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Virginia Military Academy.

Rare set of English Regency bedsteps in mahogany with caned sides and back, having a turned gallery above three tooled leather treads, the first with tambour doors below, the second now with drawer below. Circa 1800-1815.

Painting: 18” x 13” Barraud was a painter of still lifes, flowers, portraits and landscapes. Charles, Aurèle, François and Aimé were four brothers who were artists, sons of an engraver of watchplates. In 1928 and 1929 Aimé exhibited two paintings at the Salon des Indépendants (Paris). Barraud was also an associate at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts as well as having exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. The four brothers had a joint exhibition in 1951 in Paris.

Painting: 24" x 30" Maidment was a painter in oil of rural scenes and landscapes. He also used the pseudonyms of "R. Fenson" and “A. Wynn”. Dated examples of his work have been seen spanning from 1898 until 1914. The high quality of the painting and decorative subject matter have fueled an ever growing demand for Maidment’s work.

Dawn Bronze Sculpture with a gold patina, signed Height 25”, Diameter of Base: 11” Born in Paris in 1830, Dumaige studied sculpture under Féuchère and Dumont. He exhibited his sculptures depicting groups, statues, and busts at the Salon from 1862-1877. . He sculpted a large number of busts, groups and statuettes in marble, plaster and bronze, including statuettes of Desmoulins and Rabelais. He died at St-Gilles- Croix-de-Vié in 1888.

Ray Austin Crooke (Australian, b. 1922)

Painting size: 6” x 9” Crooke began painting at the age of 17 when his war service in the Australian Air Force took him to Borneo and the islands north of Australia. After the war, he remained in the area for a number of years before seeking additional artistic training at Swinburne Technical College under Roger James and Allan Jordan. He began exhibiting in 1969 and his portrayal of island life gained him great popularity. Although he lived for a time in Melbourne, the draw of the north proved too strong. He returned to North Qld and traveled extensively among the northern islands. In 1966, Crooke was appointed an official artist in Vietnam for the following three years. His work has been shown in Australian galleries from Melbourne to Sidney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. He has also had his work exhibited in the U.K. at the Tate Gallery and Leicester Galleries. The highest honor Crooke’s work has garnered is the Archibald Prize for his portrait of the writer George Johnston. The National Collection, Canberra; all State Galleries and many regional galleries have his work represented in their permanent collections. He is also held in many private collections worldwide. Crooke is listed in The Encyclopedia of Australian Art by McCulloch and Artists and Galleries of Australia and New Zealand by Germaine. John Syer, (British, 1815-1885)
Two Views of the West of England A pair of oils on canvas, retaining Frost and Reed Gallery labels.
Sight Size: 10.25" x 13" Born at Atherstone, Warwickshire, England on May 17th, 1815, Syer studied with J. Fisher, a miniaturist, and settled in Bristol. Syer was one of the prime favorites of the Victorian era. He painted landscapes and coastal scenes with figures, often in Devon and Wales, of which he was regarded as a specialist and commanded high prices. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-Colours, and for some years he belonged to the Royal Society of British Artists, but resigned his membership in 1875 after his election to the Institute. He also exhibited 19 works at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, 11 at the British Institute and 63 at the Royal Society of British Artists as well as at the Grosvenor Gallery. Examples of his paintings and drawings are in the Leeds Gallery, the Birmingham Gallery ,the Bristol Gallery, the Leicester Art Gallery and the Sheffield Art Gallery.
