Stepping Stones

Painting size: 9” x 12”
Frame size: 13.5” x 16.5”

Maidment was a painter in oil of rural scenes and landscapes. He is variously catalogued as Robin or Robert Fenson but usually just signed “R. Fenson” in red, often with a date. This was a pseudonym for Henry Maidment who also was known to have signed “A. Wynn”. Dated examples of his work have been seen spanning from 1898 until 1914. The quality of his paintings and the decorative subject matter have fueled an ever growing demand for Maidment’s work.

Jaume Muxart I Domènech (Spanish, 1922-2019)

Bullfight

Acrylic on panel, signed

Painting: 13 ¾” x 19 ½”

Muxart was a Catalan painter, part of the Grup Taüll of avant-garde artists. His work shows a strong expressionist character with structured figurative motifs. Muxart was of a generation of artists that developed during the years of the Franco regime. In 1948 he got a grant to study in Paris, where he met Picasso and decided to devote his life to art. A grant in 1952 saw him travel to Rome.

When Muxart returned home, he helped set up the Grup Taüll with six other artists (Marc Aleu, Modest Cuixart, Josep Guinovart, Jordi Mercadé, Jaume Muixart, Antoni Tàpies and Joan Josep Tharrats) in 1955. Yet, as an artist, Muxart was something of a free spirit, a value he passed on to his students at the Fine Arts faculty in Barcelona University, where he taught and would later become dean. Muxart never stopped exhibiting his work, both in Spain and abroad. In fact, his work was displayed all over the world in exhibitions in cities that included Cairo, Stockholm, London, Sao Paulo, Copenhagen, and New York.

Eavesdropping

Oil on panel, signed and dated: “1865.”

Painting size: 9” x 6.75”
Frame size: 14.5” x 12.5”

Petrus Theodorus Van Wyngaerdt (also spelled Wyngaerdt or Wijngaerdt) was born in Rotterdam. A student of J.H. Van de Laar, he painted genre scenes and portraits, as did his older brother, painter Anthonie Jacobus Van Wyngaerdt.

In "Eavesdropping", Van Wyngaerdt depicts a well-known theme from popular 19th-century French and Dutch prints-- a Roccoco figure listening at a door while a private conversation (or event) is underway. The women’s yellow skirt, pink bodice and lacy cap suggest that she is a lady (of sorts) and her plump arms, pretty features and sly expression suggest what may be going on behind closed doors.

Van Wyngaerdt’s work can be found in the collections of the Haarlem Museum. He is listed in Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs (Bénézit, 1999).

Military Encampment

Oil-on-canvas.

Painting size: 23” x 32”

Frame size: 31” x 40”

Born in Antwerp, van Bloemen was the brother of Jan-Frans and Norbert van Bloemen. His master was the battle painter, Simon van Douw. In 1694 he returned to Antwerp where he had eight students in an atelier. Van Bloemen is noted for his paintings of horses, Italian landscapes, battle scenes and market places. His works are in the collections of many European museums.
