He studied at the Corcoran School of Art with Messer and Brooke , and also with Weyl . He continued his studies in drawing at the Linthicum Institute under Ballenger and learned painting conservation from his father. Active in professional societies, he was a member and officer of the Landscape Club of Washington. He was also a longtime member of the Society of Washington Artists. He exhibited with both groups from as early as 1915 and continued through the 1930's. His work was also shown at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. As an artist, he became well known and honored for his local scenes, many of which are in major public collections. His works are held by the National Museum of American Art; Historical Society of Washington, DC; Library of Congress; The White House; Bibliothèque National de Paris; Cosmos Club; National Museum of American History; the Houston Museum of Fine Art and the Los Angeles Museum of Art. Over his life, he was honored with numerous awards for his work.

Painting: 12.5" x 9.25" Federico Jiménez Fernandez was born in Madrid in 1841 and trained at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving of San Fernando where he studied with José Gonzalez Bande. He traveled to Paris to continue his studies, as did so many other artists of the time. Jiménez was known for his paintings of birds and animals, both wild and domesticated. Jiménez began exhibiting at the age of 17 and won his first of many medals the following year. His reputation was well established at an early age and his painting “La Maison Morte” was purchased by the National Museum in 1862. He also exhibited in Germany and in Paris at numerous venues. His popularity and the taking on of commissions to decorate palaces allowed him to support his family in a comfortable fashion. One of Jiménez’ paintings, a parody of “The Judgement of Paris” is held by the Prado Museum. In this work, Paris and the three beautiful goddesses are replaced by a rooster with an apple at his feet and three hens.

Chinese,circa 1850 9.5" x 7"x 5.5" tall Clark Marshall (American, 1862-1944)
Summer Landscape Oil on canvas, signed lower right
Painting size: 14.5” x 22.5” A native of Talbot County on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Marshall became a highly regarded landscapist, painting mainly in the impressionist manner. Solo exhibitions of his work were held at the Peabody Institute and at The Baltimore Museum of Art. A student at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, he later exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Around 1918, Marshall turned to the ministry with charges in Cecil and Caroline Counties as well as in Delaware. Throughout the latter part of his life, he continued to paint, favoring evening and moonlight views of his native Eastern Shore.

Ptg: 20"x 28" Born in Natick, Massachusetts, Charles Francis Browne was primarily active in Illinois as a landscape painter and teacher, and was one of the original members of the Eagle's Nest Art Colony in Oregon, Illinois. He was married to the sister of sculptor Lorado Taft. Browne played an active role in California in 1915 when he was the superintendent of the United States section of the Panama Pacific Exposition where he won an award for painting. He had traveled West previous to that time when, in the summer of 1895, he and sculptor Hermon Atkins MacNeil and writer Hamlin Garland took a tour of Indian reservation in Arizona and New Mexico. Their stops included the Navajo Reservation, the Hopis at Walpi and Zuni villages, and this trip provided Browne with much material for subsequent paintings. In 1910, Browne was Assistant Art Commissioner in South America to Buenos Aires and Santiago. He received his art training at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1882-84 and from Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In Paris, from 1887-90, he studied with Jean Leon Gerome at the Academie Julian. He became an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago and shared a studio with George Schreiber. He was founder and editor of "Brush and Pencil" Club, president of the Chicago Society of Artists, and a member and director of the Western Society of Artists. At the Eagle's Nest Art Colony in Oregon, Illinois in the summer of 1919, he was stricken with paralysis. He died the following March at his mother's home in Waltham, Massachusetts. Sources:

James Pollard (British 1792-1867)
The London to Oxford Coaches at Mile Marker 24 Oil-on-canvas, signed lower right
Painting: 17” x 32” Pollard was an engraver and sporting artist noted for his coaching, fox hunting and equine scenes. As the son of Robert Pollard, a painter, engraver and publisher, James was encouraged to become a painter of horses. He was also tutored by his father’s friend, the engraver Thomas Bewick. Growing up in Islington, Pollard lived on a main coaching route which undoubtedly influenced his choice of coaching scenes as his primary subject matter. In 1821 he exhibited a large work at the Royal Academy “North Country Mails at the Peacock, Islington” and by 1825 he was successful enough to leave his father, marry and set up his own studio. He prospered with numerous commissions. With the demise of the mail coaches in the 1840‘s, Pollard expanded his subject matter to include racing, hunting, shooting and angling scenes. Pollard is also known to have collaborated with John Frederick Herring Senior on several racing pictures in which he painted the backgrounds and crowd scenes and Herring painted the horses. Pollard exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1821-1839, the British Institution in 1824 and 1844, and at the Suffolk Street Galleries. Many of his works were reproduced in prints which were engraved by himself, his father and others. Pollard’s work is noted for its historical accuracy, attention to detail and in evoking the spirit of the coaching age.

Slightly Bawdy Cut Sihoulette of dancing man and woman by Charles Handrup, signed and located "Paris" and dated "1909"
Sight Size: 6.5" x 8.5" Handrup was a Danish Silhouettist who lived in London between the wars. For years he ran a Silhouette Parlour at D.H.Evans Department Store in Oxford Street. Handrup was awarded a silver medal at the Empire Exhibition at Londons Crystal Palace. Printed on the reverse of some of his poatcards is the statement: : " This Silhouette Portrait is executed entirely freehand by Handrup, who begs to observe that his likenesses are executed by the Scissors alone and are preferable to any taken by machines inasmuch by the Scissor process the passions and peculiarities of Character are brought more into action. Silver Medal awarded Festival of Empire Crystal Palace 1911. " Etienne-Henri Dumaige (French, 1830-1888)
Dawn Bronze Sculpture with a gold patina, signed Height 25”, Diameter of Base: 11” Born in Paris in 1830, Dumaige studied sculpture under Féuchère and Dumont. He exhibited his sculptures depicting groups, statues, and busts at the Salon from 1862-1877. . He sculpted a large number of busts, groups and statuettes in marble, plaster and bronze, including statuettes of Desmoulins and Rabelais. He died at St-Gilles- Croix-de-Vié in 1888.

Paper Size: 3.5" x 5.5" (Unframed) Pritchard was a marine, landscape and architectural painter living in Bristol and London, who exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street and elsewhere. He is listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, and Benezit, E., Dictonnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs. This is from a sketchbook circa 1880.
