Exceptional English Burled Walnut Davenport Desk having a superstructure with hinged lid opening to a fitted compartment, above a tooled leather writing slope which opens to a birdseye maple stationary well; a side cabinet door reveals four birdseye maple drawers. Circa 1870.
This form was originally made for shipboard use (hence the term "captain's desk"), but was quickly incorporated into the home because of its compact and convenient size.
