Rare Anglo-Indian carved ebony armchair with all over leaf, vine and floral carved decoration, with a shaped crestrail above twist turned spindles and shaped baserail, the rectangular uprights surmounted by leaf-carved finials join the slightly downswepts similarly carved armrests; the caned, drop in seat surrounded by carved seatrails and raised on twist turned legs joined by a shaped and carved box stretcher. American Chippendale Ox-Bow Slant-Front Desk. Massachusetts, Circa 1780. In Nicely Faded Mahogany, the hinged, rectangular lid opening to an interior fitted with an arrangement of valanced pigeonholes and small drawers. Below are four reverse-serpentine graduated drawers and the whole is raised on graceful ogee bracket feet. The grain of the mahogany on the lid and drawer fronts is very fine and the sides are 'plum-pudding' mahogany. The pulls and some of the escutcheons appear to be original. ...

Painted marriage ceritificate, watercolor on paper, portrait of Aleda Van Ryn, sampler by Aleda Van Ryn and a group of van Ryn family printed announcements, mostly 18th C. Hendrik Swartwout, husband, maried to Aleda Van Ryn, 10 December 1760. Her sampler is dated 1752. The portrait is not dated but circa 1775. Portrait is 12.5" x 10" and the watercolor is 8 3/4" x 13 1/4"--note the far end is cropped in the image and is whole. Minor tears.

Of American interest, the origins of John Cooper remain somewhat mysterious. Most of his works are found in early American homes but he was not known to have ever left England. This small work is not typical, although the details of the faces are characteristic. Approx. 14" x 11"--circa 1725. Now in a black and gold period frame from my frame collection.
