Rare and amazing antique Chatelaine made completely by hand, with four original miniature oval paintings on wafer thin ivory or bone disks, under beveled glass. Decorative mounts are composed of hand-formed filigree coils and spirals. We find no marks on the metal, although it is probably Sterling Silver. Accompanying the chatelaine within its velvet- and silk-lined leather case, is a papyrus text, written in Pali script, usually the literary and scholarly written language of Buddhist monks. Probably 19th Century. This piece was once in the private collection of author, Genevieve Cummins, and is documented in her world class book, "Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance." A glass dome accompanies the Chatelaine, which allows all three items to be displayed. Measurements: The chatelaine is 12" (30.48 cm) long to the tip of the center chain; each filigree frame is approximately 1.75" x 1.50" (4.44 x 3.81 cm), and it is about .25" (.63 cm) thick. The papyrus is 15.75" x 2.25" (40.00 cm x 5.71 cm). The case is 10.5" x 3" x .75" (26.67 x 7.62 x 1.90 cm). Condition: Overall Excellent Condition, showing only minor issues: 3 or 4 small chips to the edge of the 4th glass, and a small area of paint loss on the grass huts, in the 1st painting (pictured); we have not attempted to clean the metal; it is tarnished; a few of the mounting prongs are missing. Papyrus in excellent condition. Leather case shows some wear, the upper, silk lining is fragile and has some tears, and the elastic which held the chains in place, is missing.
