Rare Columbian Expo Engraving Le Sueur Barrie 19th C

Rare, exceptional, original engraving, one of only 200, published in 1893, by George Barrie, Philadelphia, for the "World's Columbian Exposition," in Chicago; also called the "Chicago World's Fair," in celebration of the 400th Anniversary of Columbus's discovery of the New World.

Barrie hired only the best of artists to capture the works of art exhibited at this historical expo, and each work of art was given only 200 original prints from the plates, presenting a limited and lavish portfolio souvenir of the Fair; this one, by Francois Xavier Le Sueur [France], appears to be of a tavern keeper, exhibiting a pleased expression, and enjoying a rest among the libation barrels of his storeroom, perhaps even having had a little nip, himself. Le Sueur's signature appears in the plate, lower left, as well as the embossed Columbian Exposition Seal which has been partially cut off. "Copyrighted 1893 by George Barrie." appears in the top-center of the engraving. These were originally 18" x 12" (45.72 x 30.48 cm), on fine Chinese and Japanese papers, and this one has been cut down to 10.25" x 12.25" (26.03 x 31.11 cm). We believe the narrow black wood frame is original to the cut-down piece. Excellent condition with darkening to the edges, but no foxing; and slight water stain along the lower margin; a few nicks to the frame. We recommend that it be re-framed, and dry-mounted on acid-free board and backing. c. 1893. $16 US Shipping.
