Certainly one-of-a-kind, whimsical, works of art, in Venetian glass, a most rare and unusual, ornamental pair of fireplace tongs and matching poker. In diciannovesimo vetro veneziano di C, accoppiamento il pił raro ed il pił insolito, ornamentale delle tenaglie del camino e mazza di corrispondenza. These sculptural pieces demonstrate several of the finer details of old Venetian glass, including blue-tint "opal" glass (opalescent) handles; a curious "eye" of lattimo (opaque white) and black on each side of the tong handle extension; faux stone simulating iridescent opals at the lower end of the opaque blue handle extension of the tongs; this "stone" actually emits the spectral fire characteristic of nature's opals when held to the light; tiny, opalescent glass "pearls" encircle the crowns; a lattimo "orb" tops the crowns and actually have the appearance in light, of pearls; center rods of brilliant cobalt blue mezza filigrana canes; finishing with round, Amber Disks for the tongs; and a pointed end for the poker. The tongs measure approximately 13.5" long, 3.25" at the widest point, 4.25" length of the handle & extended opaque ornamentation. The poker is 14" long. The poker has at one time been damaged, and the point end was repaired and glazed over in complimenting blue enamel, and is missing one tiny "seed pearl"; priced to reflect the repair. The tongs are in excellent original condition. Both pieces exhibit several inclusions, bits of ash, bubble strings, and other manufacturing anomalies common to Venetian glass of the time. c. 1855-1900. $18 US Shipping. |
