Louis XV Miniature Pair after Francois Boucher 19th C

Two French miniatures after Francois Boucher, handpainted over a type of sepia transfer print, onto Celluloid. Boucher, a popular 18th Century French artist, was noted for his pastoral and mythological scenes; he was much copied and immitated, as in these lovely miniatures. One is after Boucher's "The Sleeping Shepherdess," and the other, after "The Nest" (sometimes called "The Shepherd's Gift"). Note that the artist has given credit to the master. The frames are small works of art in themselves; wood, in Louis XV style, "burled" veneer, gilded gesso edging, corner decoration, and scrollwork. One is missing a bit of the corner gesso, and the adjacent corner is missing a tiny gesso area; the same frame shows a small repair to one side. The remaining frame is missing a 3/8" (.95 cm) bit of the gilded gesso edging. The backing on the pair seems to be printed pages from a Biblical text, in French; original metal hangers are two cherubs flanking a center fleur-de-lis. Image size, 3.25" x 2.5" (8.25 x 6.35 cm); frame is 8.5" x 8" x 1.125" (21.59 x 20.32 x 2.85 cm), decorative hanger is 1.5" (3.82 cm) tall. A beautiful pair of hand-decorated miniatures in wonderful condition with minor damage as noted above. c. 1870-1900. $20 US Shipping.
