Rare 1892 Eliza Stone Hidden Faces Folk Painting Listed

Four hidden faces in this rarely seen outside of museums, original Watercolor and Ink Painting on paper, by "Eliza R. Stone," also known as Elizabeth Stone; dated "1892." This naive 19th Century miniature watercolor depicts a large ink urn with tree branches and green foliage on either side, all within a very faint graphite circle. Inscription reads: "75 years in 1892; Painted by Eliza R. Stone; 4 faces." In this 19th Century "hidden faces" painting, there are four numerals, "1, 2, 3, 4," each alongside one of the four facial profiles--one on either side of the urn stem, and one on each of the tree branches. The watercolor appears to have been mounted onto board, and measures 4" x 4.5" (10.16 x 11.43 cm). The 20th Century wood frame is 6.5" x 7.25" x .75" (16.51 x 18.41 x 1.90 cm).

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Several listings for "Elizabeth," and "Eliza" from different sources, are interesting, conflicting, and confusing. One source shows her as a "miniaturist" having painted pieces of considerable value; and another source shows her as having used several pseudonyms, including "William Lawson," "William (Mistress) Lawson," "Elizabeth Stone," "Eliza R. Stone," and others. A more indepth research effort will surely bring more interesting facts about this painter of naive miniatures. Condition of the painting and the frame are excellent. c. 1892. $10 US Shipping. [easel not included]
