Demars French Color Etching Ships in Night Antique

Antique French Frame for this wonderful Antique French Etching by P. Demars; hand-colored, small sailing vessels passing in the night; the orange of their lanterns stands out against the deep green sky and water; the eye is drawn to the yellow moon casting the ever-present "moon slick" upon the water's surface. Signed, lower right, "P. Demars." The Etching [c. 1920s] has darkened considerably, but the paper is in good condition, and can still be professionally lightened if desired. The frame, perhaps a bit older than the engraving [c. 1900-1920], shows wear, has some cracks to the gesso decoration, although it has been quite well restored at some point in time. The reinforcing staples may be seen at the verso corners, and the original brilliant gilding may be seen underneath the four reticulated side decorations. The piece is held fast with glazier's points. Camera notes: The signature photo best represents the color of the frame; the margin paper is more tan than the orange of the photos. Image plus the margins is 8" x 5.5" (20.32 x 13.97 cm), and the frame measures 17" x 12.5" (43.18 x 31.75 cm). c. 1900-1920. $30 US Shipping.
