Charming small watercolor on paper signed lower left, "Frances Emerson." Our research leads us to attribute this painting to the wife of Dr. William Emerson (1873-1957) architect, and Dean of Boston's MIT School of Architecture from 1932-1939; as well as possibly having been a distant relative of Ralph Waldo Emerson. The couple was interested in the historic preservation of structures in the Boston area; and our artist, Frances W. Emerson, was also instrumental in early preservation efforts in Charleston, North Carolina. We are not certain of the identity of this house, but it very much resembles the Hooper-Lee-Nichols house in Cambridge, MA, which was donated by Frances, to the Cambridge Historical Society, in 1957. Frances and William had lived in the home since 1923. The watercolor measures 4.75" x 6.75" (12.06 x 17.14 cm), and remains in its original gilded wooden frame to 5.75" x 7.75" x .50" (17.14 x 19.68 x 1.27 cm). Rubbing to the gilding; the painting appears to be in excellent condition, although we have not examined it out of the frame. c. 1920-1930. $12 US Shipping. |
