| Pair of Exceptional Late 19th Century of possibly Lalique Lamps of Classical Female Figures in a Frosted Crystal, with hand painted parchment shades, and are newly rewired. H:25.5" Diameter of shade: 15" Lalique, René, 1860-1945, French jewelery designer and glassmaker whose works are landmarks of arts nouveau and deco, at an early age he apprenticed to Parisian goldsmith Louis Aucoq at 16; studied École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (1876-78), Sydenham College, London (1878-80). It was later around 1907, he had an interest in glass led him to begin mass-producing elegant molded perfume bottles, which have since become design classics, and in 1921 he founded the Alsace factory that still produces Lalique crystal. He molded (and sometimes pressed) glass, often etched or ornamented in raised relief, into jewelry, vases and bowls, statuary and hood ornaments, and lighting fixtures, windows, architectural elements, in finishes ranging from the silky frosted glass for which he is best known to the clear, opalescent, and colored forms of glass. His 1920s glass came to epitomize the sleek, sophisticated forms of art deco. Lalique often portrayed the female face and form as well as animal and floral motifs, such as in this unique pair of Classsical Female Figures we see the detail and frosted glass in his unique style. It was Laliques's early works in the late 1880's that he used the familiar "lost wax" technique by which the model is made in wax while a mold is formed around the model. Then, the wax is melted and molten glass is poured into the mold. Lalique glass was made in this manner until approximately 1905 at which time the factory was redesigned for a larger production. The process was changed as the times changed such as Lalique glass is lead based, either mold blown or pressed. The favored motifs during the Art Nouveau period were dancing nymphs, fish, dragonflies, and foliage and women and in this period Laliques popularity was world wide. Characteristically the glass is crystal in combination with acid-etched relief. Later some items were made in as many as ten colors (red, amber, and green among them) and were occasionally accented with enameling. These colored pieces, especially those in, black, are highly prized by advanced collectors. During the '20s and '30s, Lalique designed several vases and bowls reminiscent of American Indian art. He also developed a line in the Art Deco style decorated with stylized birds, florals, and geometries. His elegance relflects in the style of these Classical Women, it is not evident of a signature though they appear to be his distinct style.
