Pair of 19th C. Walnut Venetian-Italian Arm Chairs
Venetian-Italian, 19th Century, a very rare pair of highly Carved Walnut Arm Chairs with tall arched backs with heavily carved scroll arms of resting putti and exquisite carved Blackamoor standing on pedestals. The stylized cabriole legs terminated in dolfin feet joined by "X" stretchers. The fabric is Venetian red with gold, the fabric is angora, mohair and silk in a pattern that is extinct and fit for the Royal Court. H:51" Seat H:21.5" Seat W:27". Blackamoors, were often referred to as Moretto or Moor's head, represent the historic emblem of Venice, dating from the Medieval European Period, when Sacacen pirates plagued the coast of Delmatia. For centuries the Moors played a significant role in the upheaval of Venetian power. The image of the Moors heads were made en vogue and were believed especially with the jewelry to bring good luck and protection. During the early years of the Turkish invasions along the coastal regions the Venetian soldiers donned jewelry in the shape of Blackamoor heads as a symbol of courage and strength against the onslaught of Moorish troops. As dominion in Venice united, the meaning behind images of the Blackamoor were most admired by families of considerable stature and nobility.- The first blackamoors were created in Venice in the late 17th century. Later, during the mid 1800s, Venetian artists carved some of the most impressive and graceful examples known, much to the delight of wealthy European families whose demand for fine art and furnishings seemed insatiable. Blackamoor figures ranged from monumental, life-size figures serving as torchieres to diminutive table top figurines used as candleholders. This particular pair of chairs are rare and the carving is detailed and with great detail in the figural genre of this exquisite pair of Walnut Chairs.
