John J. A. Murphy (American, 1888-1967) The Nativity Woodcut on paper, signed lower right.
Painting size: 14.6” diameter ” Though born in Boston, painter and printmaker John J. A. Murphy lived in New York City. He was a member of the Guild of Free Lance Artists and is best known for his woodcuts. A posthumous exhibition of his work was held at New York’s Sylvan Cole Gallery in 1990. In this tondo print of the Nativity, attenuated figures merge with a rocky background to create a shelter for the young family. Meanwhile wide striations surround the Christ child to suggest a radiating, holy light. John J. A. Murphy is listed in Who Was Who in American Art (Falk, 1999) and the Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers (Fielding, 1986). |
