Joseph Hirsch (American, 1910-1981) The Confidence Lithograph on paper, signed in pencil. Published 1944 by the Associated American Artist, Edition of 250.
Image: 9.5” x 11” Painter and printmaker Joseph Hirsch studied at the Philadelphia Museum of Art School from 1927 to 1931. His work can be described as Social Realist with an emphasis on social and political themes and direct, naturalist rendering of forms. In “The Confidence,” Hirsch delineates the knobby hand of an elderly man whispering into the ear of a colleague who sports and smug smile and a comb over. The two men-- perhaps business partners or politicians-- seem satisfied with themselves.
Hirsch’s work is found in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran and the Library of Congress. |
