Rue au Caire Henri Gaston Dagnac-Reviere (French, 1864-1945) Oil on panel
Painting: 13.75” x 10.5” Henri Gaston Dagnac-Reviere trained in Paris where made his official debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1885. He regularly exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts where he also served as a juror. While he painted figures and landscapes, his specialty was orientalisme, romanticized scenes of people and places in the Middle East that appealed to French popular taste in the 19th and 20th centuries. Here a tall tower rendered in piercing white suggests the intense heat and light of high noon. In contrast, dark close buildings on either side signal an old neighborhood where a figure dressed in red robes walks with ease. Dagnac-Reviere was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’honnuer in 1932. His work can be found in the major museums of Nice and Tunis, and he his listed in Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs (Bénézit, 1999). |
