Fishing Boats on a Misty Morning Bartol Wilhelm van Laar (Dutch, 1818-1901) Oil on panel, signed.
Painting size: 8.5” x 13” Born in Antwerp, Bartol Wilhelm van Laar was a professional woodworker and an amateur painter. Like his Dutch artistic forebears van Laar focused on a particular genre, in his case, maritime scenes. In this painting, van Laar effectively captures the quietude of the seashore at dawn. The two most prominent ships are anchored with sails furled, yet are surrounded by a small fleet of boats bobbing along in full sail. The artist's scumbled brushwork and soft gray and brown palate create an atmospheric merging of beach, sea and sky. He is listed in Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldinde Kunstenaars by Scheen |
