Attributed to Alfred Stannard
(British, 1806-1889) Oil on artist board. From the supply label on the back we can date this to the 1830’s. An artist in a family of artists, Stannard was the brother of Joseph and father of Alfred George. Although known primarily as a landscape painter, he also produced a few highly regarded marine and coastal scenes. Stannard’s works were exhibited at Norwich and at the British Institu- tion from 1826-1860. The Norwich Museum holds several of his works in their permanent collection. Stannard is listed in Dictionary of British Art Vol. IV: Victorian Painters by Woods, Dictionary of Sea Painters by Archibald and British 19th Century Marine Painting by Brook-Hart.
