Jean-Jacques Berne-Bellecour (French, 1874-1939) Hussar on Horseback Reading a Map Oil on cradled panel, signed and dated: “1909”
Painting size: 18.25” x 15” Born to noted military painter, Etienne Prosper Berne-Bellecour, Jean-Jacques followed in his father’s artistic footsteps. After studying with the likes of Jean Leon Gérôme and Edouard Detaille, he began a long career focused on military themed paintings and snow covered landscapes. Berne-Bellecour exhibited regularly at the Salon Artistes Français, showed at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1924, and presented at the Salon des Indépendants between 1926-1939. He also had smaller, personal exhibitions at Mulhouse, Lille, Douai and Lyon. Eventually, his talent and penchant for military subjects meant that his paintings found their way into some notable collections, including those of General Pershing and former Prime Minister Georges Clémenceau.
